The ingenuity on display here is fantastic. Overall, though, We Were Here is a fantastic coop horror game that will hopefully take off amongst co-op enthusiasts in the future. The only downside with this game is the in-game VOIP doesn't work too well, forcing you to use something like Discord. This game thrives in atmosphere instead of full-blown scares, which works to its advantage. There are areas with some mild jump scares and some actual panic-inducing rooms that play on a common human fear, such as being trapped or drowning. It's important to note that this game is more creepy than full-blown horror. This makes it so you both have to keep the conversation on topic instead of diffusing the tension with chatter about other things.
You both have clues that will help the other escape, and so you must constantly be communicating about the game itself. The main gameplay loop of this game is ingenious - you and your coop partner are split up and are trapped. 8.5 Game Watcher We Were Here Together provides a great assortment of co-op challenges that will test your ability to communicate vocally as well as to solve them together. To install We Were Here, you need to have Steam installed. How can you be scared if you constantly have a friend watching your back, or if you two can laugh off and joke about whatever scares are coming your way? How can a creepy atmosphere affect you if you can distract yourselves just constantly chattering? Well, We Were Here fixes that ingeniously. Horror games and co-op have historically not gone together at all.
